Senior Instructor Portia Mills Henderson

Welcome to my e-learning platform, where I offer two signature courses designed to support emotional well-being for children, teens, and adults. Inspired by my daughter Nina’s courage during her fourth-grade transition, I created Nina’s Coping Toolbox, an engaging SEL and coping-skills program that helps children build calm, confidence, and emotional awareness.
The characters throughout the curriculum are inspired by the loved ones in my life, from family to friends, making each story heartfelt, relatable, and rooted in real connection.
Deshun, Ray, and Nina are my children, and it brought me so much joy to create a course with them at the heart of it. Their stories, personalities, and real-life experiences helped shape each lesson, making the program warm, authentic, and relatable for every family.
My second course, Discovering Me, was written from my own healing journey. I wanted to offer others the very tools that supported me. Putting my steps on paper through the journal was deeply powerful, and it continued my process of self-discovery and healing. From that journal, the Discovering Me e-learning course was born.
This course teaches you to slow down, listen inward, and honor your emotions with compassion and truth. It helped me release what I had been holding and strengthen my relationship with myself in ways I did not expect. I did not just design this experience. I lived it.
Because of that, I know with certainty that Discovering Me holds the power to change lives. It changed mine.
I hold a Master of Education in Social-Emotional Learning, Mindfulness, and Yoga. I am a Certified Breathe For Change Facilitator and certified in Adult Mental Health First Aid. These qualifications strengthen the foundation of my work and deepen the support I offer to children, families, and educators.
Outside of my professional work, I am a wife, a mother of three, and a proud United States Navy veteran. My personal journey with trauma, healing, service, motherhood, and advocacy guides the heart and purpose behind everything I create.

💜 From My Heart 💜
My Passion & Purpose I am the founder of Healing the Roots Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping children thrive beyond adversity. I am also the creator of Resilient Reads LLC, where I write stories and curricula that teach Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and coping tools for all ages.
My passions have come full circle as I write stories that nurture the heart and lead an organization that brings those stories to life. I believe children deserve emotional safety, support, and tools that help them navigate life with confidence and compassion. We must gently heal the wounds we carry from childhood and do our best to prevent those same wounds in the children we love and serve.
Emily Maroutian wrote, “Look at your wounds. When you learn how to heal them, teach others.” This quote reflects both my journey and the mission I carry forward through my work.
Through Resilient Reads and Healing the Roots Foundation, I work to open communication, break harmful cycles, and strengthen the fragile roots of childhood. When we learn to understand and manage our emotions, we develop healthier ways of thinking, responding, and connecting with others.
Families, schools, and organizations with financial need may apply for scholarships through Healing the Roots Foundation to receive access to these curriculums at no cost, because there should never be a financial barrier to learning these vital skills.
Every story, every lesson, and every resource I create is designed to help children and families feel seen, loved, and supported at home, in schools, and throughout communities.
Together, we are planting seeds of resilience, one child, one family, and one community at a time. 🌱💫

Michael's Rainbow
Adventures
💜 A Legacy of Love 💜
God gave me one of the greatest gifts of my life when He allowed me to create Michael's Rainbow Adventures with my uncle, Michael L. Mills. Even though he is no longer here, this book will always be a joyful reminder of his love, creativity, and light.
Together we created a heartfelt adventure that helps children feel safe to explore their emotions and express themselves in healthy ways. This story embraces every feeling, including happiness, sadness, grief, and all the colors in between. It is more than a book. It is a gift of hope, healing, and connection, and it carries Michael's legacy forward through every rainbow. 🌈🧡
